I liked this picture right out of the camera, but after playing with it a little in Photoshop, I was able to make it pop even more. Notice how the after shot is sharper and how it seems to be backlit with blue light. Also, the light and shadows are more defined.

Here’s how I did i:

  • As always, convert image to LAB color and sharpen only the Lightness layer using Unsharp Mask. Then return to RGB color mode. (PS action here)
  • Add 2 Hue/Saturation layers, one with blues maxed and the other with cyans maxed (that’s what gives it the slight backlit appearance)
  • Levels adjustment layer (midtone = .71 highlight= 210)

This picture taken in Old Montreal needed to be kicked up a notch. Notice the After shot is much sharper, brighter and has more feeling, more ambiance. It’s a friendlier looking place, than the darker Before shot.

ADDED:

For anyone interested how I did this, here’s the rundown.

  • As always, convert image to LAB color and sharpen only the Lightness layer using Unsharp Mask. Then return to RGB color mode. (PS action here)
  • Add Hue Saturation adjustment layer and increased the reds +51
  • Add Levels adjustment layer for contrast/brightness (Midtone Input Level=1.05, Highlight Input Level=182)
